The Royal Succession Committee of the Tooro Kingdom has selected George Desmond Kamurasi, 36, as the next Omukama, succeeding his late cousin, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.
The committee met on Friday, September 4, at Fort Motel in Fort Portal City. Of its 21 members, 18 attended, and 15 voted for Kamurasi.
The body was formed by the Ababiito royal clan on August 28 and has deliberated daily since August 31. It is chaired by Omusuuga Charles Akiiki Kamurasi, who told journalist Andrew Mwenda that custom requires the public announcement only after the late king’s burial.
Kamurasi is the son of Prince George Desmond Jimmy Mugenyi, younger brother of the late King Patrick David Matthew Olimi Kaboyo III
. That makes him a first cousin of King Oyo. According to Mwenda, the will of their father, King George Rukidi III, named Mugenyi second in line after Olimi Kaboyo, placing Kamurasi squarely within the established Babiito succession.
King Oyo died on August 26 in Texas while undergoing treatment, ending a reign that began in 1995 when he ascended the throne at age 3. The clan has said he left no confirmed biological heir, which opened the search to the wider Rukidi lineage.

Kamurasi has lived largely in Britain in recent years, keeping a low public profile. He has also drawn attention for his recent marriage to a British woman. Mwenda says he briefed Chief of Defence Forces General Muhoozi Kainerugaba and Commander of Land Forces General Kayanja Muhanga.
Both endorsed the choice as consistent with Tooro custom and law, and the CDF conveyed that President Museveni supports the committee’s decision after consultations in Fort Portal confirmed broad consensus.
The formal announcement to Babiito clan leaders is expected after the burial, currently set for September 12. Until then, the selection stands as the committee’s recommendation, not a completed coronation.
